Why is self esteem important?

Someone with low self-esteem has negative feelings about themselves, believing that they are not worthy of love, happiness or success. With research linking low self-esteem to mental health issues and poor quality-of-life, this is a potentially dangerous way to live.

When someone with a high self esteem takes good care of themselves. They make good decisions about themselves which enhance their value rather than break it down.

You may want to help a friend or family member if they are having self esteem issues. Here are some warning signs. Warning signs of low self esteem:

Social Withdrawal
Anxiety and emotional turmoil
Lack of social skills and self-confidence
Expecting little out of your life
Reluctance to take on challenges

What can you do to increase your self esteem?

Be nice to yourself
Get moving (exercise)
No one is perfect don’t think this
Everyone makes mistakes, don’t think you’re the only one
Do things that make you happy
Surround yourself with good people who support you

Things you can do to help friends with low self esteem:

Make sure to be a good friend
Help them identify their strengths
Give them a chance to succeed
Praise there accomplishments
If their self esteem is very low, refer them to counseling
